Getting found on AI search before your competitors do

People are asking AI assistants for recommendations now. Here's how to make sure your business is the answer.

Search is changing. People used to type a few keywords and scroll a page of blue links. Now a growing number ask an AI assistant a full question and take the answer it gives them. If your business isn’t part of that answer, you’re invisible to that customer, no matter how good you are.

Here’s how to get found on AI search before your competitors figure it out.

Why this matters now

When someone asks an assistant “where’s the best coffee near me” or “who can fix a leaking roof in Cape Town,” the assistant doesn’t show ten options. It gives a short list, often just one or two names. Being on that list is the new front page. Being left off it is the new page two, and nobody goes to page two.

The good news: most small businesses haven’t adapted yet. There’s a real window here.

What AI assistants actually read

AI results are built from the same signals that have always mattered, plus a few new ones. The basics still carry most of the weight:

  • A clear, well-structured website that plainly says what you do, who you do it for, and where.
  • A complete Google Business Profile with the right categories, hours, photos, and a steady flow of reviews.
  • Consistent information everywhere. Your name, address, and phone number should match across every listing, exactly.

Then the newer signals:

  • Plain-language content that answers the questions your customers actually ask, in the words they actually use.
  • Reviews and mentions that give the assistant evidence you’re real, active, and trusted.

The practical checklist

If you do nothing else, do these:

  1. Make sure your website answers your top ten customer questions in plain English.
  2. Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile, then keep it active.
  3. Get a steady, honest stream of reviews, not a burst once a year.
  4. Keep your details identical across every platform you appear on.
  5. Publish useful content regularly, so there’s something fresh to find.

None of this is a trick. It’s just doing the foundations properly, which is exactly what most businesses skip.
